Awesome Alumni to Receive Honors
It is a fact that on any given day, in any quadrant of the world, Beloit College alumni are making a difference. They are peace corps volunteers, mentoring at-risk boys and girls, initiating grass roots social programs in their communities, creating economic policies, teaching others what they learned while a student at Beloit College, and most importantly, they are continuing their intellectual journey. On Sept. 27, 2008, during the Alumni Assembly of Homecoming & Reunion Weekend, we will honor six such alumni. The Alumni Association is proud to announce the names of the 2008 Distinguished Service Citation Award recipients, and the Young Alumni Award Recipient.

Andrew Boryczka’98 - Young Alumni Award
Thomas J. O’Neill’83 - Distinguished Service Citation
J. Edson Way’68 - Distinguished Service Citation
Kenneth J. Beeby’58 - Distinguished Service Citation
Albert R. Hough’42 and Lois Malone Hough’42 - Distinguished Service Citation – At Large Recipients

First Annual Domestic Minority Alumni Conference
On Saturday, Feb. 23, Beloit College hosted its First Annual Domestic Minority Alumni Conference. Alumni from all over the United States, including as far as Texas, came back to Beloit to evaluate and discuss the environment for domestic minority students on campus. The Conference began on Friday with a reception welcoming participants at the newly renovated Intercultural Center. On Saturday morning, alumni, students, faculty, and College administrators met at the Beloit Inn to discuss issues concerning domestic minority students on campus and talk about the importance of diversity at Beloit College. The conference concluded with afternoon sessions led by current students, groups of faculty, and alumni who conversed on how to build a more inclusive welcoming environment at Beloit College for all. If you would like to learn more about the Conference or the mission of the Intercultural Programs on campus, contact Cecil Youngblood.
Happy Birthday, My Beloit!
February marked the one year anniversary since the launch of Beloit's exclusive online community, My Beloit. My Beloit allows members of the Beloit College community to connect with old and new friends, as well as create and join groups based on similar interests, professions, and geography. It is also a powerful career networking tool, allowing users to post open positions at their workplace, find alumni working at companies you are interested in, and connecting recent graduates to alumni in professions they are entering.

All alumni, parents, faculty, and staff have the ability to join My Beloit. 2008 class members are also welcome to join. If you have not registered yet, contact us with your name and class year for an invitation.

International BRAG Night in February
More than 400 alumni, parents, and friends of Beloit College attended 15 events across the U.S. and China in celebration of Chinese New Year. The Office of Alumni Affairs would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Alumni Board of Directors, our volunteers who organized the events, and everyone who participated in making this the largest BRAG event in the College's history.
The Chapin Scholars Initiative
In the fall of 2007, the challenge of growing support for student scholarships lead to a new opportunity: the Chapin Scholars Initiative. Chapin donors were asked to increase their gift by $1500 to provide additional funding for Chapin Scholarships. The leadership of Chapin donors is evidenced everywhere on campus, whether it be through support of the Beloit Fund, the library, athletics, or any number of other important areas. Chapin donors were encouraged to continue to support the things they value but were also asked to consider an additional $1500 to support scholarships for deserving students. The initial response to this Chapin Scholars initiative has been inspiring with 33 Chapin donors earmarking additional gifts to support the new scholarship fund. If you have questions about the Chapin Scholars Initiative, please contact Chapin Society Coordinator Jenifer Allen’05.
Athletics Launches New Web Site
On Feb. 20 the Beloit College Athletic Department unveiled a new Athletics website, replacing the old site that had been in operation for five years. In addition to new team pages covering Beloit's 18 intercollegiate sports, the site also features a staff directory with photos, the Athletics Master Calendar, and a "Recruit Me!" section for prospective Buccaneers. Additional sections include an apparel page, a link to the Buc Open site, and a quick facts section, and a visitors guide and campus map for newcomers to campus. Plus the site has a link for the Athletic Hall of Honor and a "Did You Know?" page highlighting some of the interesting facts connected to Buccaneer Athletics. The site can be found at http://www.beloit.edu/~bucs/.

What’s the Matter with College? a Beloit Alumna Responds
In July, The New York Times Magazine published "What's the Matter With College," an essay by the historian Rick Perlstein and invited college students across the United States to respond. Some 600 undergraduates did -- many agreeing with Perlstein's assertion that "college as America used to understand it is coming to an end," many dismissing his argument as nostalgic pap, still others taking the occasion to critique higher education from an insider's perch. Beloit College alumna Kim Pernell'07 responded with her insightful essay, “An Organized Rebellion”.
New Parents and Families Website Launched
Have you noticed that the Alumni, Parents and Friends website is now called Alumni and Friends? Why, because a separate site has been created specifically for the Parents and Families of Beloit College students.  The new site was developed by an interdepartmental team of representatives from Admissions, Student Life and External Affairs to help parents and families find information specifically of interest to them.
